Symmachus

Symmachus

Origen's (c. 230 AD) Hexapla included Symmachus' version. However only fragments of the text remain.

Symmachus is believed to have based his work on earlier translations by Theodotion and Aquila. He may well have been associated with the Ebionites, a Jewish-Christian sect.

Symmachus’ translation of the Hebrew is often a fairly free rendering, which may reduce his value as a textual witness.
