שׁקע shq` "sink"
in Amos 9:5 paired
with עלה "rise". Am 8:8 though a closely parallel verse is less clear. The kethib
(text as written) has ונשקה venishqah presumably a niphal from שׁקה shqh meaning something like "be
given a drink". The qere
(scribal correction) reads ונשקעה venishqe'ah suggesting an otherwise unknown
niphal of שׁקע shq' ("be lowered"?). With
most translators it seems best to read ושׁקעה weshaq`ah as in 9:5
"sinks". As the kethib
does also.
