שׁוֹפָר shophar "ram's horn, trumpet". Ram's horns were used as trumpets for producing loud and dramatic noise associated with war, warning and worship (2:2; 3:6).

Strictly, the chatsotserah was more like the modern trumpet being metallic. That the two instruments were seen as related is shown by their use together in Hos 5:8 and Ps 98:6.
