מַעֲשֵׂר ma`aser "tithe/tenth share" these were offered to the temple, a kind of religious taxation paralleling the share paid to the royal administration. Biblical texts vary about how, to whom and exactly why this tenth was paid, but as elsewhere in the Near East, it was always regarded as a holy obligation.
