חבל chbl "take as security, accept as pledge" When the poor needed a loan they had to offer the lender some security (property held in case they did not repay the loan). Rules concerning garments taken as security are found in the Torah. This verb, for example, is used in two passages describing the sort of situation Amos 2:8 envisages (Ex 22:25 and Dt 24:17).
 
 חֶרֶב chebel a noun from the same root, means a "measuring cord". At Amos 7:17 the word appears in Amos' description of Amaziah's fate (and Israel's) when the punishment finally falls on Israel.
