אַשְׁמָה
'ashma "guilt". Only once in Amos, at 8:14,
where translators often render with a transliteration "Ashimah". Elsewhere
it can usually be rendered by "guilt" without problems. This word is
almost only found in later texts, though the verb is widely used, not least by
Hosea (Hos 4:15; 5:15;
10:2; 13:1;
14:1) and is more common in
the Deuteronomic History than in Chronicles (Jdg 21:22;
1 Sam 6:3, 4,
8, 17;
2 Sam 14:13; 2 Kgs 12:17
cf. 2 Chron 19:10;
Ezr 10:19).
