syncretism

(Adj. syncretistic), the attempt to unify or reconcile differing schools of thought or religions. Borrowing of ideas, images and other material becomes "syncretistic" only when there is an attempt to merge the two streams into one. So Hosea can use language borrowed from Canaanite religion, but since he vigorously opposes any confusion of Yahwism with Ba'alism this is not syncretism - by contrast his compatriots who make Yahweh into a ba'al follow a syncretistic religion.
