simile

A form of expression that declares a similarity between two things. Unlike metaphor, simile makes clear the nature of the comparison being made - it is more precise though often less poetic. Thus, the simile in Am 2:9 is quite precise - the Amorites were tall! On the other hand the metaphor in 4:1 leaves the reader to work out how these women resemble "Bashan cows" and different readers have, in fact, arrived at differing conclusions.
