philology

The detailed study of words and language. Comparative philology compares the meaning and use of similar combinations of sound/letters in related languages. In view of the small nature of our sample of Classical Hebrew writing - only the Bible itself with a small number of inscriptions - comparative philology is important for the light it can throw on rare words.
