An example or pattern, thus when learning a foreign language a typical verb (or verbs) will be chosen to learn as paradigmatic for other verbs. Some historians of science have referred to those patterns and models that govern our thinking as paradigms and have said that a "paradigm shift", a change in these patterns, is needed for any real breakthrough. By extension the word is used of those patterns of thought typical of particular cultures or sub-cultures. In this case the acceptance of the Christian message means a "paradigm shift".
