(Hebrew) "what is repeated or learnt": a collection in writing of authoritative Jewish oral tradition arranged and revised in the 3rd century CE. Its 63 tractates contain much that throws light on Jewish thought in the time of the New Testament and Early Church. (Cf. Talmud & Halakah.)
