This city in Northern Mesopotamia, on the river Euphrates, flourished until its destruction by Hammurabi king of Babylon c1765BC. Many archives and other texts from the 18thC BC give a picture of life in patriarchal times in an area near Haran. The association of this area with the Hebrew patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob gives this information particular interest for biblical scholars.
