sabbath/shabbat

As a day of rest and religious observance the Sabbath is found in all parts of the OT (except the Wisdom Literature). As the seventh day of the week (= Saturday) Sabbath marks out the passage of time, and with other festivals gives shape to the calendar. The main texts in the Torah (Pentateuch) concerning the Sabbath are fairly general and imprecise. Provision of rest for others was important (Ex 20:10; 23:12; Dt 5:14). Shrewd businessmen did not always appreciate this provision of Sabbath rest from normal work and commerce, see e.g. Am 8:5 where Sabbath is linked to the celebration of the New Moon.
