Amos 1 (Temporary English Version - TempEV) printable version

1 The words of Amos, who was among the sheep farmers from Tekoa, and had visions about Israel, in the time of Uzziah King of Judah and of Jeroboam son of Joash King of Israel, two years before the earthquake.

2 He said:
Adonai roars from Zion,
and from Jerusalem gives voice;
the shepherds' pastures wither,
and Carmel's crest dries.

3 Thus says Adonai:
Because of three rebellions by Damascus, because of four...
I will not call it back;
because they have threshed Gilead
with iron implements.
4 I will send fire on the house of Hazael,
and it will consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.
5 I will break the gate bars of Damascus,
and cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven,
and the one who grasps the sceptre from Beth-eden;
and the people of Aram shall go into exile to Kir.
Says Adonai.

6 Thus says Adonai:
Because of three rebellions by Gaza, because of four...
I will not call it back;
because they carried into exile an entire people,
to hand over to Edom.
7 I will send fire on the wall of Gaza,
and it will consume its citadels.
8 I will cut off the ruler from Ashdod,
and the one who grasps the sceptre from Ashkelon;
I will turn my hand against Ekron,
and the remains of the Philistines will perish.
Says my Lord Adonai.

9 Thus says Adonai:
Because of three rebellions by Tyre, because of four...
I will not call it back;
because they handed over an entire people to Edom,
and did not remember the fraternal covenant.
10 I will send fire on the wall of Tyre,
and it will consume its citadels.

11 Thus says Adonai:
Because of three rebellions by Edom, because of four...
I will not call it back;
because he pursued his kin with sword
and perverted his compassion.
His anger burned forever,
and he kept his rage permanently.
12 I will send fire on Teman,
and it will consume the citadels of Bozrah.

13 Thus says Adonai:
Because of three rebellions by the Ammonites, because of four...
I will not call it back;
because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead
for the sake of enlarging their territory.
14 I will light a fire against the wall of Rabbah,
and it will consume its citadels,
with shouting on a day of battle,
with a whirlwind on a day of storms;
15 then their king shall go into exile,
he and his officials together.
Says Adonai.
